The Evolution of Racquet Sport isL a c r o s s e

Tennis, squash, badminton and racquetball are all great sports. They exercise and display skill, strength, speed, stamina, cunning and coordination. However there are two important virtues in which all these sports are lacking. The first and most obvious is teamwork. Cooperation is an important part of human development and the sporting court (or field) is one of the best places to culture it. The second aspect missing from most racquet sports is something that nearly all sports lack. This is the virtue of craftwork. The ability to visualize and then build something with one’s own two hands is a hallmark of the human race.

So in what sport can all of this be found? The answer is simple: Just look to the sport of lacrosse.

Lacrosse, with its full field teamwork and the necessary creation and maintenance of the pockets of its racquets, possesses two of the most important things that all too many sports lack. Further, lacrosse has rich history that is rooted in ancient mysticism. Long before Europeans ever came to the New World lacrosse was being played not only as a sport but also as martial art and a healing ritual. To avoid the universal harm of war a game of lacrosse was often played as its surrogate the winner thus claiming that which was contested.
